Common Side Effects (SCALE Trial)

The SCALE Obesity and Prediabetes trial reported the following common side effects with liraglutide 3.0mg daily.

Nausea~40%

Most common. Usually worst in the first 2 weeks of each dose level.

Diarrhoea~21%

Typically mild and transient.

Constipation~19%

Increasing fibre and fluid intake helps.

Vomiting~16%

More common during dose escalation.

Decreased appetite~10%

Expected therapeutic effect.

Dyspepsia~10%

Indigestion. Smaller meals recommended.

Abdominal pain~5%

Usually mild. Severe pain needs assessment.

Injection site reactions~14%

Due to daily injection frequency. Rotate sites.

Serious Side Effects

Acute pancreatitis

Severe persistent abdominal pain. Stop medication and seek immediate medical help.

Gallbladder disease

Higher rates of gallstones and cholecystitis observed. Watch for upper right abdominal pain and nausea.

Thyroid C-cell tumours

Observed in animal studies. Contraindicated in patients with personal/family history of MTC or MEN2.

Hypoglycaemia

Risk is increased if taking other diabetes medications. Monitor blood sugar if applicable.

Increased heart rate

Sustained resting heart rate increase reported. Monitor if you have cardiac conditions.

Daily Injection Consideration

Because Saxenda is injected daily (unlike weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy), injection site reactions are more common. Rotate between abdomen, thigh, and upper arm to minimise discomfort.
